The fences around the Beginner Skills Track at Pohe Island Bike Park came down just in time for the summer school holidays and Christmas 2022. The track was built by Robinson Asphalts and is designed to provide small features and obstacles for riders to practice their bike handling skills. Test out your balance on the see-saw and wooden ramps, and perfect your control on the skinnies.
An asphalt surface means that it can be used by small wheels as well as bigger bikes. Already we have seen bikes from plastic trikes to adult-sized mountain bikes, scooters, and roller bladders all honing their balance and control.
A couple of bench seats against the concrete wall provide seating for parents and guardians close by to the action. Over the next few months, Bike Northland and Whangarei District Council will continue to develop the park. A mural is being painted along the concrete wall at the base of the building, and a tunnel is being constructed to ride through at the end of the skills track. Over time as funds allow the surrounding area will be landscaped.
