Trail Description
Approximately 10 kilometers east of Whangarei off the Ngunguru Road is Glenbervie Forest. The car park is on the left-hand side of Maruata Road a few hundred meters before the forest entrance. This is a commercial working forest managed by Matariki Forests. Whilst recreational users are able to access the forest during the week, users should expect to encounter forestry traffic, including heavy vehicles, at all times and must comply with signage at all times.
Matariki Forests asks that all users complete their online induction prior to entering the forest. The mountain bike trails are primarily old-school singletrack of grades 3-5, for riders of intermediate and above ability. The trails can be quite slippery when wet, and many tree roots create some technical challenges. The trails are spread over a wide area linked by forestry roads and often not signposted or marked. Visitors to the area wanting to ride the single-track trails would be best to get in touch with the local Whangarei Mountain Bike Club via Facebook to inquire if there is someone who can show them around. Or refer to Trailforks for up-to-date trail maps and routes.
Other users and cyclists can explore the extensive network of forestry roads and tracks that span this forest. Many of these pass through areas of native bush as well as plantation forests, and extensive views are to be had from some of the high points in the forest.
