Bike Northland is a charitable incorporated society that promotes all things cycling in Northland.
We have been around since 2007 and are governed by a voluntary board of 5 who are all passionate about cycling in one form or another.
We aim to work with the community and local organisations to improve facilities and safety for cyclists in Northland.
We have worked with Whangarei District Council to help design and develop the Pohe Island Bike Park which provides multiple choices and opportunities for the community to enjoy a wide variety of cycling activities. These include a pump track and a learn-to-ride track. The Bike Park is part of the city network of off-road trails and shared pathways. In addition, Bike Northland is part of the Whangarei District Council’s Walking and Cycling Strategy group to ensure that there is a voice for cycling interests.
Bike Northland has been instrumental in establishing the Bikes in Schools programme in more than 20 schools across Northland. Schools access funding to build a cycle track and purchase a fleet of bikes and helmets for the students to use. The bikes are stored at the school and are used as part of the school physical education curriculum, and student recreation.
Bike Northland are proactively improving the cycling skills of our tamariki through the delivery of the Cycle skills training. The program is funded by the WDC, NZTA and ACC and has been developed to help increase the number of people in the community cycling safely.
Meet the members of the Board.
