Another successful event was held over Anniversary weekend with some 80 trucks all packed into the schoold field at Hurupaki School. Fortunately the fields were much drier this year so there were a lot less wheel tracks left at the end of the day.
Mainfreight again leant us a truck to use for a blind zone demonstration. The purpose of this exercise is to provide members of the public an opportunity to sit in the drivers seat of a large truck and see the road and surroundings from the drivers perspective. We had six bikes spread out around the front of the cab to show where a cyclist is and is not visible to the driver. The demonstration shows the importance of never riding up the left and side of a truck, making eye contact with the driver and not stopping close in front of the cab. There were many conversations ideally leading to cyclists feeling more confident when sharing the road with a heavy vehicle.
