Pohe Island Bike Park

Pohe Island Bike Park in Whangarei

Pohe Island Bike Park is located in central Whangarei just off Dave Culham Drive. An urban Bike Park it has something for everyone, from toddlers on balance bikes to young and old mountain bikers, e-bikers wanting to gain their confidence, Roadies keen to do some fitness training on the Circuit Track and BMX and freestyle riders. It is also suitable for other small wheels: skateboards, scooters, and skaters.

Car parking is available at the car park off Dave Culham Drive. There is additional car parking just a few minutes away off Riverside Drive or over the harbour across the Te Matau a Pohe Bridge. The park has been designed for all levels of riders with a large covered flat area for learners who can then improve their skills by progressing to the Skills track, Pump Track and Circuit Tracks. The park is ideally located to allow easy access to some of Whangarei’s Shared Paths, notably the Onerahi Shared Path and Hatea Loop.

  • Pump Track;  Built and designed by international pump track specialists Velosolutions. Two tracks in one! A standard Velosolutions Pump Track, and the first oversized pump track built in NZ, 2.5m wide, 1.5m high berms. Perfect your technique see if you can complete a lap without pedalling.
  • Circuit Track; a super smooth asphalt loop five meters wide and 800 metres long. The track is perfect for all wheels big and small. Gain your confidence, get fit or, race your mates around this track free from traffic. Designed to be suitable for criterium racing there are social crit races held once a week at the track during the summer months.
  • Beginner Skills Track; practice your balance and turning skills with obstacles such as slalom poles, see-saws, ramps and, bridges. This track has been designed to provide entry level challenges for riders of all ages.
  • Open-sided building; provides shelter from the sun and rain. It has an asphalt surface throughout making it the perfect place for littlies, (and bigger people) to practice their balance and learn to ride whatever the weather.

The park also includes toilets, drinking fountains, and a bike repair stand with tools. Whare Bike, Whangarei’s open bike kitchen are on site the first and third Sunday of each month from 1pm to help with all your cycling queries. The Bike Park is open and free to the public. The park can be used for a one-off event or regular training. If you need exclusive use you need to book. Up-and-coming events can be seen on the Pohe Island Bike Park Calendar.
