Trail Description
Aotearoa’s most northern great ride that takes you through stunning Northland scenery from the Bay of Islands in the east to the remote Hokianga Harbour on the west coast. Along the way you will pass coastal inlets, lakes, streams, and stands of native forest.
An off-road cycle trail that takes you from one side of Northland to the other. Ride east to west or west to east along 87 km of trail primarily of Grade 1 or 2 with some areas of Grade 3.
The trail is divided into four sections, which can be ridden in either direction. Kaikohe is a popular starting point, as it is in the middle and the highest point of the trail, with the gradient predominantly downhill from in either direction. Okaihau is also a good starting point for day rides.
Update: Due to a closure of a section of the trail between Opua and Kawakawa, the trail is now best started/finished just east of Kawakawa. You can still ride between Kawakawa and Opua using quiet, gravel, country roads, but it is a hilly ride (see maps below). Alternatively, you have the option of taking your bike on the historic Bay of Islands Vintage Railway. Check their website for timetables and bookings.
