Resources for Schools

Here are some useful resources for schools to ensure you get the most out of your Bikes and Bike Track.

Bike and Helmet Checklist

Ensure all staff and students know how to carry out a simple bike safety check before each ride. A simple A, B, C check can be done by even the youngest students.

Air – check tyres are pumped up properly

Brakes – check both your front and back brakes are working

Chain – check your bike chain is oiled

Or for a more comprehensive list.

Everyone should also know how to fit a helmet correctly. Check out this cool video or this checklist.

Skills circuit

Create a circuit to challenge your students and keep cycling fun. This is a useful setup to use once your class can all ride to make a lesson fun and interesting. Print it out here.

Curriculum Extension and Ideas

There are loads of ways to keep things exciting with bikes, whether it involves riding them or on wet days creating activities around cycling and safety messages. Check out Freeville School’s winning cycling storyboard from one New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) competition. Some ideas could be;

  • Wheels day
  • Bike to school day or week. Who can cycle (or scooter), to school the most number of days each term?
  • Treasure hunt on a bike
  • Create a cycle-friendly route from school and take the class on a picnic

For even more ideas check out BikeReady Curriculum Resources

Most importantly Have Fun!!!
