For those of you who drive regularly along Otaika Road, or cycle or walk across it, it probably feels like the resulting disruption is lasting forever. However, things are moving along. Most of the asphalt has now been laid with just the bridge and either side of it still to do. The bridge requires some 16 beams which are being transported from Auckland. The beams will be lifted into position overnight in early July.
On completion, it is hoped that the SH1/Tarewa Road intersection upgrade will greatly improve traffic flow and safety. In addition, it will be safer for walkers and cyclists with a shared path under the bridge and a signalized pedestrian crossing at the intersection. These improvements should provide better connectivity to other walking and cycling paths, the Whangarei Hospital, Northland Polytech, and the CBD.
