Students from Te Horo School made the trip in to Whangarei last week to try out the facilities in and around Pohe Island Bike Park. They were fortunate to choose a sunny day in what has been a very wet late spring, and so were able to make the most of the opportunity.
Students from Year 1 to 8 all came, arriving with their helmets already on, and wearing the fabulous school red shirts and jackets, ready to try out the facilities. The team of instructors had the bikes all lined up and ready for them so no time was wasted in getting riding.
Those just learning to ride could practice their gliding on the smooth flat surface in and around the shelter. More confident riders sped around the Circuit Track and took on the Pump Track. Most students then rode along the edge of the rugby fields to the Skate Park and the newly asphalted ‘Old BMX” track next to the destination playground. This was a real hit, especially with the younger riders.
Kevin and Gwen then took the more competent riders around the Hatea Loop after a briefing on shared path etiquette, being courteous to other users, and staying single file and on the left. Everyone met back at the Bike Park for a well-earned lunch. No doubt everyone slept well that night!
